Transformers 2007

June 29, 2007

Last night my wife and I watched the premier of Transformers 2007. The cinema was full and all of the seats were occupied. We almost ran out of seats, luckily we found one at the middle topmost portion of the balcony. I do not like our location, but I have no choice.

The Movie

I could say that Transformers 2007 is one of the best movies I have ever watched. The cinematography was  excellent, the visual effects are superb, and the story line is just right.

It was a blend of intense fighting scenes and a touch of comedy and drama.

The creators did a great job in combining the distant future setting of the Transformers to our present day setting. The movie showcased some of the hottest cars, the latest military warfare technology and cool IT gadgets. Not to mention a hot babe like Megan Fox. :D

I like how they portray Bumble Bee as a Camino Corvette instead of a Beetle car, it added fashion and power to the character. Other Transformer characters also took a different an much better form, Wrench was a Hummer2 ambulance, Iron Hide was a masculine GMC truck. My favorite Decepticon character Starscream was an F22 fighter.

I am a fan of Transformers and I know how challenging it is to create a movie from the cartoon series.

At first I was skeptic at the movie, "is it going to be just like the Transformers I used to watch?", but it surpassed my expectations.

The movie was really good that you wont notice its 144 minute play.

Synopsis

The interstellar battle between the Autobots and Decepticons rains destruction down on planet Earth as director Michael Bay adapts Hasbro and Takara's popular Transformers franchise into a big-budget, live-action summer tentpole extravaganza in this ambitious sci-fi action feature starring Shia LaBeouf, Tyrese Gibson, Bernie Mac, John Turturro, John Voight, and, of course, Optimus Prime and Megatron. Enormous aliens have chosen the third rock from the sun as their ultimate battleground, and as the villainous Decepticons struggle to obtain the key to unlimited power, a young Earthling named Sam Witwicky (LaBeouf) may stand as mankind's last hope for survival.

~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

Overall the movie was a great success.

I give Transformers 2007 a 10 out of 10 rating. It is a worth watching again movie.

When we get out from the cinema, I saw viewers falling in lines and waiting for their turn. Not like the kind of viewers shown on tv who are shouting and screaming for their movie idols, but viewers who loves Transformers and who knows what a a good movie is.

They are about to see one of the best movies ever.

Needle Talk

June 28, 2007

I had my annual physical exam today at the UM Multi Test Clinic. It is a company shouldered expense, so I don't have to spend a single cent. I took some tests and had my blood samples.

Talking About Needles

Its really frightening to see a needle piercing to your skin, and the blood that is oozing into the tubes. Good thing their technologists are good at spotting my vein so I only took one shot with the needle. I really had a bad experience with needles when I donated blood at the Red Cross. Their staff are so "hindi marunong", I took several shots with the needle on both arms before they found my vein.

Eye to Eye

I had my eyes checked. You see, I have this problem with my left eye. I sometimes blurs out, but it returns to normal after a short period. I though my doctor will issue me a pair of glasses, but she didn't . "All you need is to rest you eyes and apply this eye drop" according to her.

Meet Iris

I met one of my students before, Iris Panopio. She had this little accident.  Her thumb was smashed by a door, which dislocated her thumb joint (ouch!). She took a little surgery which led to the removal of her thumb nail. I really feel sorry for her. The good thing is, she can have her nail grow back in three months time.

The physical exams is not yet completed. I still have to return to my doctor for the test interpretation, have a schedule with my dentist.

Milestones of the Future

June 27, 2007

Want a list of all the groundbreaking technologies due over the next decade? Presenting the 13 technologies guaranteed to change the world between now and 2020.

Summer 2007 - The Real Quad-Core

AMD releases the first single-chip quad-core CPU. Code-named Barcelona, it promises 20 to 50 percent better performance than the competing multichip design from you-know-who.

"Thats what marketing is for"

Late 2007 - Hello, OLED

Sony introduces the first OLED (organic light-emitting diode) television. It's too small and too expensive for mass consumption, but early adopters love its 3mm profile and 1,000,000-to-1 contrast ratio.

"Organic technology is getting into shape. It wont be long that we will be using organic databases."

2008 - Like Wi-Fi—but Everywhere

Carriers launch the first WiMAX services in the U.S., giving major metro areas wireless access that rivals the speeds of Wi-Fi. The difference? No more hot spots. It's everywhere you go.

"This time you can surf the internet while surfing the waves!"

2008 - Eight-Core and More

Intel unveils an eight-core processor and completely revamps its Core architecture, moving the memory controller and graphics circuitry from distinct chipsets onto the CPU itself.

"Why not just call it nCore?"

2010 - So Long, Laser Printer

The first Memjet ink-based printers hit the market, delivering 60 pages per minute at a reasonable cost per page. The trick: multiple print heads that span the entire width of the paper you're printing on.

"This printer will shorten my time for a coffee break"

2010 - The High-Def DVR

Seagate releases a 3.5-inch hard drive that stores 3 terabytes of data. That's 3,000 gigabytes. We're talking about a digital video recorder that records nothing but high-def video.

"Guess pirates need to upgrade their technology as well"

2011 - Can You Say 4G?

Fourth-generation cellular networks debut in the United States. The LTE (Long Term Evolution) standard doubles the throughput of 3G networks, offering 3 to 4 Mbps to real-world users.

"Lets wait and see"

2011 - Chips Go Optical

IBM perfects a chip for mainframes and other high-end machines that uses optical connections instead of copper. Moving photons instead of electrons improves data transfer speeds eightfold.

"Does this mean less heat sinks and fans?"

2015 - A Cure for Jersey Drivers

The first cars equipped with Motorola's MotoDrive technology roll off the assembly line. Able to calculate their speed and position relative to other vehicles, these cars can automatically avoid accidents.

"Perhaps we can have this technology used for 'multicabs' and 'habal-habals' here in Davao as well"

2016 - HDTV Is Obsolete

Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) debuts with a resolution of 7,680-by-4,320 and 22 speakers of surround sound, dwarfing today's HDTVs, which top out at 1,920-by-1,080.

"I got to have this one!"

2016 - Power Off, Memory On

Manufacturers use carbon nanotubes to offer NRAM (nonvolatile random-access memory). Unlike today's SDRAM and flash memory technologies, it can hold information even when you lose power.

"Cool!"

2019 - Wash 'N' Wear iPods

Flexible, washable OLED screens hit the market. That means laptops that roll up like place mats—not to mention smartphone and music-player displays built right into your clothing.

"Another point for organic technology"

2020 - Offices Everywhere

Wall-sized displays made of low-power polymers and improved video-conferencing technologies let groups of home-based workers interact as if they were sitting face to face.

"This will also enhance online forums and chat! experience"

A glimpse at Pareto distribution

June 26, 2007

Have you ever wondered, how come Goggle and Yahoo can offer unlimited spaces for everybody? I have asked myself the same question, until I got the answers from experts. Its all about Pareto distribution.

So what is Pareto distribution? It is a law of probability, named after an Italian economist Vilfredo Pareto, found in a large number of real-world situations. Outside the field of economics is it generally referred as the Bradford distribution.

The Pareto distribution was originally used to describe the allocation of wealth among individuals since it seemed to show rather well the way that a larger portion of the wealth of any society is owned by a smaller percentage of the people in that society.

Going back to the Goggle and Yahoo, Pareto distribution tells us that only a small portion of the population will use large amount of spaces, the majority of the population will use only small spaces. And since the price of data storage and servers are getting cheaper everyday, it is safe to promise your users unlimited spaces.

The promise "unlimited space for users" is just a marketing strategy.

There are also other real-world situations where you can see Pareto distribution

  • Frequencies of words in longer texts
  • The size of human settlements (few cities, many hamlets/villages)
  • File size distribution of Internet traffic which uses the TCP protocol (many smaller files, few larger ones)
  • Clusters of Bose-Einstein condensate near absolute zero
  • The value of oil reserves in oil fields (a few large fields, many small fields)
  • The length distribution in jobs assigned supercomputers (a few large ones, many small ones)
  • The standardized price returns on individual stocks
  • Size of sand particles
  • Size of meteorites
  • Number of species per genus (please note the subjectivity involved: The tendency to divide a genus into two or more increases with the number of species in it)
  • Areas burnt in forest fires

Last day of being 27

June 25, 2007

Today is my last day of being 27 years old *sob*. Its hard to believe that I will be 28 tomorrow . I feel like it was just last week that I graduated and got my first regular job and turned 21.

It seems nowadays time is so fast that you can no longer notice the days that passed by. This is really scary, but its reality.

 Birthday Present

Yesterday I received one of my best birthday gifts ever. Its a simple, hand-made journal. I really like it because it is so personalized. My friends have been encouraging me to have my own journal, its a way of keeping a close relationship to God.Yeah no argue to that, but can I just use my PC or PDA? I really don't like seeing my writing, because its so grrrrrr….

Oh well, I now have a personal journal. Thanks to my friends in CCFF. I guess I no longer have the reasons not to do one.

Birthday Preparation

Like others, I stop counting my age after I turned 24. If someone asks me how old am I, I always pause of a moment and subtract 1979 from the present year. Birthdays are no longer that excited as before. When you are here, it seems that you no longer mind celebrating your birthday or not.

But whether I like it or not I have to celebrate it.

I can not stand to look at the faces of my officemates in revolt and anger specially Joe d man. (hahahaha *joke)

I prepared some surprises for you guys!

Best Friend Windzhor

While I was at the grocery this afternoon, I met one of my best friends back in high school, Windzhor Mynx. Its really nice to see old friends. We stopped for while and talked about accomplishments, our friends and our connections.

The guy married the girl of his dreams, and I am happy for him. And felt sorry for my other friend who loved him. Its funny to think that I was part of the master plan really.

Time For Myself

It seems I still have a long evening to enjoy being 27. I am passing this age only once, even if I live for an eternity.

I will start thinking tonight what were my accomplishments when I am still 27, perhaps a bottle of ice cold beer would be a good company.

The music in me

June 23, 2007

Ever since I was a kid I already had the interest in music. I still remember when I was 6, I was fascinated upon seeing my uncle play songs like the boxer, stairway to heaven and songs from local artists like asin and freddie aguilar. Even though I couldn't play any instrument, I still loved listening to music.

How it all started

I started playing my first instrument when I was 11 yrs old. I was in grade 5 then when I was given an opportunity to join our school's rondalla group. My instrument back then was a big bajo de arco. Its a kind of bass guitar that is used in rondalla. My dad bought a bajo de arco, which I used until I graduated elementary. Back then we were using notes and not chords or song sheets.

I used to read a series of do - so do - so re-la re - la when playing the bajo. The funny thing was I do not even know how to tune the instrument or read chords or song sheets.

As long as I had my copy of do - so do - so re-la re - la, all went well. Our music trainer was the one who tunes the bajo for me. My bajo was donated to the school after I graduated.

Highschool Days

During highschool I met friends who also played musical instruments. Back then guitars were hot like pan cakes.

You are a campus figure if you play the guitar well, girls will come after you. :D

My dad bought me a gibson guitar from Cebu which is still existing until now. I was introduced to rock and alternative music. The hits during those times were Nirvana, Metallica, Eraser Heads, River Maya, Yano, Wolfgang, etc… I also started playing on amateur bands; not for money, but for fun and you know g**ls and gigs.

During those times tabs are rarely available and costs a lot, that is why I go to song hits with lyrics and chords.

 College Days

When I was in college, I was focused on my studies. I was a scholar with some grades to maintain. My activities in music declined. However, I started playing bass guitar during those time.

My experience with my bajo gave me some head start in learning how to play the base.

Rock bands during those times were replaced by group bands like code red, nsync, 911 and spice girls. My music interest shifted to pop and r&b. The worst thing was I could not sing and dance.

At Present

I am full time in my IT career, but I decided to give some time for my hobby in music. After of several years of staggering skills in music, I made a break . Last year I learned how to play the keyboard. I bought myself a bass guitar. I am also planning to buy a Korg keyboard once I have the resources.

My skills and interest in music returned. I can play music by ear. The next thing the I need to develop is my skills in singing because I sing like a cow .

I met several professionals who are also planning to create a band, jazz and samba band in particular. Now I do tutorials for bass guitars, guitars and keyboards. I am looking forward to that day when I am going to have my own music video and compose my music. Like what my teacher said:

Nobody is old to start learning music.

The Guy’s Rules

June 22, 2007

Finally , the guys' side of the story. I always hear "the rules " from the female side.
Now here are the rules from the male side. These are our rules!

Note.. these are all numbered "1" ON PURPOSE!

    1.   Men are NOT mind readers.

    1. Learn to work the toilet seat. You're a big girl. If it's up, put it down. We need it up, you need it down. You don't hear us complaining about you leaving it down.

    1. Sunday sports. It's like the full moon or the changing of the tides. Let it be.

    1. Shopping is NOT a sport. And no, we are never going to think of it that way.

    1. Crying is blackmail.

    1. Ask for what you want. Let us be clear on this one: Subtle hints do not work! Strong hints do not work! Obvious hints do not work! Just say it!

    1. Yes and No are perfectly acceptable answers to almost every question.

    1. Come to us with a problem only if you want help solving it. That's what we do. Sympathy is what your girlfriends are for.

    1. A headache that lasts for 17 months is a Problem.  See a doctor.

    1. Anything we said 6 months ago is inadmissible in an argument. In fact, all comments become null and void after 7 Days.

    1. If you won't dress like the Victoria's Secret girls, don't Expect us to act like soap opera guys.

    1. If you think you're fat, you probably are. Don't ask us.

    1. If something we said can be interpreted two ways and one of the ways makes you sad or angry, we meant the  other one

    1. You can either ask us to do something or tell us how you want it done. Not both. If you already know best how to do it, just do it yourself.

    1. Whenever possible, Please say whatever you have to say during commercials.

    1. Christopher Columbus did NOT need directions and neither do we.

    1. ALL men see in only 16 colors, like Windows default settings. Peach, for example, is a fruit, not A color. Pumpkin is also a fruit. We have no idea what mauve is.

    1. If it itches, it will be scratched. We do that.

    1. If we ask what is wrong and you say "nothing," We will act like nothing's wrong. We know you are lying, but it is just not worth the hassle.

    1. If you ask a question you don't want an answer to, Expect an answer you don't want to hear.

    1. When we have to go somewhere, absolutely anything you wear is fine. Really.

    1. Don't ask us what we're thinking about unless you are prepared to discuss such topics as SEX, CARS,  the shotgun formation, or   BASKETBALL.

    1. You have enough clothes.

    1. You have too many shoes.

    1. I am in shape.  Round IS a shape!

    1. Thank you for reading this. Yes, I know, I have to sleep on the couch tonight; But did you know men really don't mind that? It's like camping.

I must admit, it's pretty good.

Double your money in 100 days!

June 21, 2007

Unbelievable? Believe it!

My friend introduced me to an investment opportunity through the internet a month ago, and it got my attention. In fact I have been monitoring my money and witnessed how it grows everyday!

But don't let the title shock you, I'm just kidding. The truth is your money will grow to 80% in 100 days, thats almost double diba?

Ok to be honest with you all, I think it is not a scam, I have seen it worked on others and my colleagues and my friends , and most importantly it worked for me too.

I started my investment with a 1000Php (20 US) last May 22, 2007. Three days from now I can have my capital back, and still my investment continues to grow.

Is it risk free?

It is free risk! I agree it is a 100% risk, but I took it anyway. Besides, I cans spend 1K Php in a single dinner at a restaurant with friends.

Business is all about risks!

I have colleagues who invested as much 50K Php and 30K Php, and they already got their capital back and their investment going still.

The site is http://www.eaindex.com/  If  you have some questions or somehow interested, perhaps I can help you. Just email me and lets invest. I can say

It's worth a try!

New Template

I have changed my template from Empyrean - Ice to Candy - Blue. My previous template was cool, but it doesn't match my adds and widgets. And dark background of Empyrean made my blog look small and tight.

I do not like tight spaces, but I am not claustrophobic, I just like wide open spaces better.

My new template makes my blog looks wide and free, and it also make my adds and widgets blend. I also like the blend of blue color (one of my favorite colors), and the images blends perfectly.

Not too much, but stylish.

Getting Organized

In todays fast-paced society, knowing where you are and knowing what you are doing and what you should do next is important. You have to be organized, otherwise you will end up circling, not knowing when and where to stop.

Getting organized is one of my self-struggles. I am a extrovert person with some part of an introvert. Generally, I find it difficult to organize. I have tried and struggled everyday just to keep my schedule at pace.Though I am practicing time management but my impulsive personality keeps it all shaking. In practicing time management, I have tried using

Organizers & Planners

These nice looking piece of notebook works just fine. I have been using planners and organizers for years, but sad to say it only works for the first few months of the year. I see organizers as baggages, since I have to bring a backpack to place my organizer where ever I go. Backpacks does not look good on barongs or long sleeves you know. Another thing about organizers is I do not like seeing my writings. Although others say that my writing is good, well, they haven't seen it all. Back in college my writing was perfect - as I see it of course. But for 7 years of typing on computer keyboards and more than 8 hours a day, my writing became poor. Again when the year is about to end, I get excited of having a new organizer for the next year. (silly me)

Cell Phones

This is my Nokia 6020, not much but stylish. Now this little thingy have an organizer an a planner. My problem with cellphones is I can not stand pressing the buttons. I can not stand text message, I am impatient and wants results fast. So I prefer calling. Not that I do not send text messages only that I prefer to call (if my load permits of course). I haven't used my cellphone as my organizer. I do not have plans even.

PDA

Now this is different. These gadgets are more powerful that cellphones but less powerful compared to laptops. This is my Palm Zire 71. Again, not much but stylish. I use this in organizing my schedules, to-do lists, quick notes and contacts. It has a built in camera as a feature. The more I use it the more I get dependent to it. Like my cellphone, I can not leave home without it.

Even though I am now comfortable in organizing my schedules with my PDA, still the self-struggle of organizing is still there. I hope I can get things straight sooner or later. Getting yourself organized is a skill one must learn, and it is important in todays fast-paced society.

Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer

June 19, 2007

Fantastic!

Once again Marvel shocks the world with its release of Fantastic Four - Rise of the Silver Surfer. This movie will keep you in a 1hr and 29 minutes ride of wild aerial chases, combat scenes, explosions and fantastic powers. Stunning visual effects brought Silver Surfer alive. Wits and funny scenes will make you laugh.

Synopsis:

The enigmatic, intergalactic herald, The Silver Surfer, comes to Earth to prepare it for destruction. As the Silver Surfer races around the globe wreaking havoc, Reed, Sue, Johnny and Ben must unravel the mystery of the Silver Surfer and confront the surprising return of their mortal enemy, Dr. Doom, before all hope is lost.

Casts and Characters:

    Ioan Gruffudd                Reed Richards/Mr Fantastic
Jessica Alba                 Sue Storm/The Invisible Woman
Chris Evans                  Johnny Storm/The Human Torch
    Michael Chiklis             Ben Grimm/The Thing
Julian McMahon           Victor Von Doom/Dr. Doom
    Doug Jones                  Silver Surfer/Norrin Radd

And my conclusion is:

The characters in this movie are already built, so if you happen to missed the first movie I suggest you watch it first. I really wanted to see how they will portrait Galactus- Silver Surfer's master with powers you can only dream of, but to my disappointment, it was not what I expected. This movie kept me guessing what will happen in the end.

I give it a 8 out of 10 rating. This is a worth watching movie.

Movies to watch

June 18, 2007

A Movie Critic

I am fond of movies and I am very choosy when it comes to it. Guess I have a knack for criticizing movies. I look at the story, choice of words, musical score, technical aspects like lighting, visual effects and the actors that portrays the characters. I sometimes simulate, making what ifs. "What if Nicolas Cage portrays the role of Captain Jack Sparrow?" Things like that.

After I watch a movie, I always rate it by 1 to 10 having 10 as the highest, and classify it as

  1. Worth watching again
  2. worth watching
  3. Just for curiosity
  4. Not worth watching

The last movies I watch were:

A week at the Queen City of the South

Career

I was in Cebu last week fixing some problems with systems automation. At first I thought it would be another excruciating week of early ins and late night outs at the office, but it turned out to be an easy one.

Last week was extra-ordinary, I conducted my first job applicant interview outside our office walls. And to think of it its hundreds of miles away. I interviewed an applicant who stand out from the rests. To make the story short, she got the job. Congratulations Jacqueline!

Dinner for Three

Last Friday was full of pep talks and laughters. We went to Larchian's Barbecue Place near Fuente Osmenia. I ordered a lot of barbecues of different kinds. When I received the bill, I couldn't believe it - it was so cheap. Though it was my third time to visit the place, but last time was great. Joining me was our developer and our newly hired analyst (the one I interviewed back there).

There I saw an improvised "kamayan" style of eating, they wrapped their hands with cellophane - to appear hygenic. Ha! never saw that one before. In fact I never tried it, and I don't think I would! It looks funny and stupid.

Are KOREANS Invading CEBU?

I looked around and noticed that Koreans have invaded the place as well, they are all over Cebu. No offense to our Korean friends, but it seems that whenever I am in Cebu, their number is multiplied exponentially.

I went into a grocery in Ayala Center and it was crowded. The only thing that I noticed is the number Koreans shopping,  "ang dami nila!". Almost every aisle it go, I see them. It feel like I am the foreigner. I also remembered an incident last year when I went to Banilad Town Square at Cebu, there were these Korean kids who annoyingly calls everybody passing in front of them - "nang-aasar pa!".

I came to ask myself why are they and other foreigners love to stay here and why are most of us Filipinos are go abroad? "Are we missing something here?"
